Trayvon Martin|

(For Trayvon Martin)

6/21/12

Some of us

still can’t believe

you’re gone

You should be

enjoying the summer

laughing and celebrating

the school year just ended

and looking forward to your future

I heard today

Police Chief Lee

who failed to arrest

Zimmerman after

you were viciously and senselessly

murdered

was fired

Reading on

I saw that he had resigned

and received full

retirement benefits

a 3 month severance

and one week’s salary

and any earned compensation

according to his contract

The article said

“We need to move forward”

I wasn’t sure if I should

laugh or cry

do they think this empty gesture

will really make

a difference

do they think they are going

to prevent protests and riots

fueled by ignorance and hate

and injustice started by George Zimmerman

dear child

I am very sorry this had to happen

to you

I am very angry this had to  happen at all

and since abolition

nothing has really changed at all

dear child

I wish you could forgive us
