Quiet Night

On this quiet night

everyone is out

leaving me and quiet behind

Except for the dishwasher

the clock on the kitchen wall

ticking to keep me company

the A’s| game on the radio

Derek Jeter|’s up at bat

Strikes out

occasionally the wind

carries sound of trains

both railroad and BART|

the next door neighbors

walk by and shut their door

more distant sounds

car doors closing

voices down below

walkers passing by

sound of children’s

happy laughter

my imagination wanders

as I wait for the quiet

to arrive

but it never does

Noisier still

Thoughts in my mind

Interrupting exterior sounds

quiet doesn’t last very long

if it comes at all
