Truth In Modern Times – A Vignette

I

Standing
Smiling
Holding a sign
Cars
stopped
waiting for the light to turn
Awkwardly
Looking around you
or through you
thinking
did I lock the door
when will this light turn
crack head
crazy
lazy
why can’t he work too
if I gave him money
he’d probably just
buy alcohol or crack
all hopes exhausted
desperate situation
looking for a quick fix
to help soften the situation
smiling knowingly
as you hold the sign
it wasn’t long ago
when it was you
sitting behind the wheel
* * *
II
Comfort and  Lies In Modern Times
He doesn’t give you
more than you can handle
what doesn’t kill you
makes you stronger
No pain
No gain
* * *
III
like the pot
of water
on the burner
he started each day
the water starts
out still
a layer of beads
slowly small bubbles
start to move up
gaining in number
gaining in volume
rapidly coursing
pressure keeps building
into a grand explosion
disillusioned
shaken
out of answers
he finds himself
on the street corner
holding a sign
smiling knowingly
