the picnic| a poem|

every thursday

you can find

her here

at 5:00 o’clock

in the woodsy park

where they first met

several months ago

walking their dogs

you will see

a carefully laid out blanket

with a picnic basket on top

a chunky vase

filled with fresh flowers

from her garden

and

a young woman

sitting patiently

waiting

for her love

she brushes

wisps of hair

away from her face

her braided golden hair

wrapped in a ballet bun

on top of her head

highlighted by the sun

her long skirt

covered with  flowers

much like she keeps in the vase

paired with a bright yellow camisole

he calls her Sunshine

she glances at her phone

and checks the time

he should be here soon

she rechecks the contents of

the basket

although it doesn’t

matter if she’s forgotten

anything

but she never does

filled with his favorite

dishes

She smiles and

patiently waits
