Alternative Fuel
Sometimes alternative fuel
is a shopping cart loaded
chock full of groceries
in front of a mother and her young son
pushed like a walker
with enough groceries for a family of three
for about a week
Sometimes alternative fuel
is the sweat on your brow
as you push the shopping
cart to your apartment
on a hot summer’s day
the mother and child laughing
and smiling as they talk about
their adventures that day
adjusting to a new normal
no longer caring who sees you
like you once might have
driving past and thinking
so glad that’s not me
and the knowing that
at least for a moment
humility and ingenuity
made things a little bit easier
if only for a moment in time
After all it is the simple victories in life
that matter the most . . .
